Another Reason I am NOT Going Back to Corporate America

Jan 31, 2023

I have a friend that is going through a job search

And during one of our working sessions (helping her build an alternate escape plan), she mentioned that she received an offer from a company that she liked but would have to relocate.

The company offered a one-time relocation bonus which I thought was light but she would have to pay it back if she left before a year which I am guessing is still standard.

It got me thinking that one, I don’t think there is a corporate scenario in which I would relocate my family, especially across country and into a market with fewer opportunities. Plus will you even like the job/company once you get started? Interviewing is like social media, you only see the good bits

Second, shouldn’t the company guarantee three years of salary to relocate? What if leadership changes or the company pivots?

Three years is my number but that would seem fair. But the way companies look at it you get to move your family, with no guarantees, just for the honor and privilege of working for them.

Plus, this position doesn’t need to be onsite, it could or should be remote.

It is this type of BS that keeps me motivated to stay out of corporate America!
