A Three Step Plan to Improve Your Productivity

Feb 08, 2023

One thing I was not prepared for when I made my escape from corporate may surprise you

It was both a blessing and a curse

It was the amount of time I had available and how to best use it

In corporate with all the meetings (most unnecessary), email exchanges and busy work you had relatively little time to get actual work done. Deadlines drove the work you did

When you go solo, you decide

It took me a while to figure out how to structure my days to make sure I am focused on hitting my goals

My 3 Step Plan works for me as it gives me structure but also flexibility

  1. Use your calendar to block time for your focused work. I block 6am to 10am for my focused work. This could be content, client deliverables, strategy, etc… I then schedule meetings, podcast interviews, networking, etc. after that.
  2. I also schedule/block time mid-day to get outside. This is critical if you are working from a home office or a co-working space. It is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air. You have to schedule it and treat it like an appointment
  3. Leverage accountability groups (my name for them). I am a member of a community called The Process Online and one of my favorite offerings is the deep work sessions they offer. When I am stuck it helps me focus

I am not an overly detailed person so the structure needs to be a bit fluid but this mini-system has really helped me become much more productive

I find I can get more work done in a single 4-hour session than I could in a week
