Tired of Corporate's Command & Control Tactics? Go Fractional

Nov 27, 2023

Phrases such as 'allowed', 'ordered', and 'mandated' might conjure up images of a military setting, but in reality, these are the words increasingly used by executives in large corporations

In recent times, we've seen a significant shift in the corporate world. From being "Allowed" to work from home, to being "Ordered" back to the office, and now facing "Layoffs" – these changes signal a deeper trend.

What's the underlying theme? Command and Control.

But here's an interesting observation: GenX is increasingly opting out of traditional corporate roles. Why? They are seeking more than just a one-way street in their careers. This is not just a fleeting trend. By 2027, it's anticipated that over 50% of professionals will move away from traditional "employee" roles.

Let's break down the dynamics of the evolving relationship between companies and individuals:

  • W2/Full-Time Employee: This is where the company has significant control over the relationship. Priorities, timelines, and schedules are predominantly dictated by the company.
  • Freelance: Here, the relationship is transactional. Companies pay for specific services, and the individual delivers, often within a fixed timeframe and for a set fee.
  • Fractional: This is where a partnership flourishes. The individual joins the team on a part-time basis, but the essence of success here is genuine collaboration.

The acceleration in the freelance and fractional space is no surprise. The talent pool in this sector is richer than ever.

Prediction: Organizations that cling to the old command and control model are at risk of losing their best employees. The future belongs to those who embrace flexibility, collaboration, and mutual respect.

Thanks to @john Arms for planting this seed in me. I can’t stop thinking about it!
